Tsunami Postapocalypse: 3 Years Aftermath in Arahama Sendai Japan

The pictures should speak for themselves.

I surveyed the area which runs along the coast in Arahama, Sendai, Japan. Only two concrete houses survive in what used to be a large residential area. The general feel is not dissimilar to Pompeii.

A formidable new sea wall is being built. The place feels quite sad, but there are signs of life - like a little makeshift skate park someone has built.

A temple was totally washed away, and the graveyard was severely damaged, but has been mostly rebuilt.

I entered the second house pictured. It has one traditional Japanese-style room. I climbed upstairs and was creeped out by a locked silver glass door - I pictured one of those Japanese horror movie ghosts with long straight black hair pushing its face up against the glass - gave me the willies so I went downstairs.

Many of the daffodils in people's gardens survived and are flowering. The tsunami wiped out so much it's unbelievable. From the damage and detritus on top of the first house pictured, I estimated the water would have reached at least thirty feet above ground, if not more.  You can see the sand rifts inside that house.

The tidal wave crossed over this canal!

You can see the new sea wall behind the trees pictured above. It's very high.

Upstairs locked door gave me the willies - spooked me out. Was waiting for long black hair to appear through glass.

These were well kept houses up until the tsunami three years ago.
