Le Jardin du Calvaire - Carcassonne's Island of The Stations of The Cross
Le Jardin du Calvaire appears at first sight to be a raised, walled cemetery similar to other cemeteries in France and Italy - specifically the English Cemetery (Isle of the Dead) in Florence. It was quite a surprise, therefore, to discover that it is dedicated entirely to monumental Stations of the Cross. There are only three graves marked by flagstones at the foot of the Calvary-like mound at the center of the compound.
The most thrilling feature of Le Jardin du Calvaire is an extremely eerie crypt containing a partially destroyed altar and statues.
